Description

Sorbus aria is a multi-stemmed tree and its leaves have numerous tiny white hairs on the undersides characterised by a silvery-white colour that flash in the wind. This unusual characteristic makes the leaves appear to be dark green, then white, and back again.  The more popular choice is the Sorbus Lutescens which has a conical growing habit when young, white blooms in spring and orange- red berries in the autumn.  Whitebeam is an abundant source of food for many insects and birds.  It is tolerant of shade, pollution, windy and exposed areas.  It can be seen along many streets and parks as it is a perfect ornamental tree.  Growing in an upright position the medium sized Whitebeam tolerates chalky soils and rich lime soils.

Where to Plant

Plant full sun for best leaf colour, well-draining as it does not like waterlogged areas.  Somewhat drought tolerant.  Ultimate height and spread - 5-10m x 10 metres in about 20 years.
