Salix Alba - White Willow

White willow are slender, with yellow-green drooping branches that love boggy locations.  White willow is a native tree common all over the UK, more so in the lowland river areas.  It can be a large tree up to 25m with a flowing shape.  It has long slender leaves with a white underside visible in any breeze giving the tree a glistening effect.  Willows are fast growing, extremely adaptable trees that will grow in almost any conditions including permanently waterlogged soils.  They can also tolerate a certain degree of salt and wind exposure.

Willow trees can be coppiced to produce a large number of stems that can be used for weaving, fences, etc.  They are easy to grow and are excellent for screening, windbreak, sound barrier, country or farmland planting.
