Characteristics

The Hinnomaki red gooseberry is an outstanding introduction from Finland with sweet flavours, aromatic beautiful dark red fruit.   The berries are bright red, sweet and juicy and great right off the bush.  The Hinnomaki red is mildew resistant, and self fertile.  Crops are in good quantity and perfect for pies, jams, etc.  Plant full sun for best fruiting, well draining soil.  If planting in containers, be sure to water well as plants in containers dry out quickly.  

Where to Plant

If planting outside, allot for 1 gooseberry per metre.  Gooseberry bushes are tolerant of most soil types, but make sure it is well draining, moist, but not waterlogged.  Water well during the dry spells.  Gooseberries are very attractive to bees and other wildlife.
