Characteristics
Pyracantha coccinea is native to south eastern Europe, the Himalayas and Central China. They are one of the best cold hardy pyracantha cultivars. They can be semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub with an upright, spreading to arching growth habit. Their branches are stiff and have large thorns.
Pyracantha leaves are evergreen, narrow dark green coloured elliptical in shape with leaf margins slightly scalloped. Small white flowers borne in clusters from May to early June, followed by very showy red berried fruit in the autumn. Ideal for winter food provisions for wildlife.
Where to Plant
Plant in full sun to partial shade, well-draining moist soil. They can be tolerant of dry soils, once established. Pyracantha can be used on trellises, as a foundation plant, natural security barrier around the garden.
Pruning can be done to maintain shape and height of the plant and to remove the berries once they have dried up - wear thick gloves as it is not called 'firethorn' for nothing! Heights and spreads are similar - 1.5-3m x 1.5x3m. Plant 3-5 per metre, single row for hedge.
