Description

Parrotia Persica or the Persian Ironwood Tree originates from Persia (Iran) and is a truly magnificent explosion of colours in the autumn.    It is a medium sized deciduous tree, with large deep green leaves turning a spectacular, rich yellow, gold, purple and red colours in the autumn.  Red flowers are produced on bare branches in winter and early spring.

Parrotia Persian Spire was chosen for its columnar to upright oval growth habit and green leaves that sport purple margins through the growing season. . Fully grown specimens may retain its bush-like quality and almost pyramidal shape. It can grow to about 30-40ft with about a 15ft spread in 25-40 years.  RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit).

Where to Plant

Parrotia persica should be planted in well-drained, moist soil, full sun to partial shade.  They are good for woodland areas or a spot that is a bit protected and away from cold, drying winds.  Parrotia also prefer a rich, fertile soil that does now dry out, so make sure you keep the Persian Ironwood well-watered.
