Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis)
The largest of all spruces and can grow to heights of 125-180 feet with a spread of 3-5 metres in diameter. It is a good alternative to other woodland firs such as Pinus sylvestris or the Scot Pine. Its crown is open with somewhat pendulous branches. The base of the trees are commonly swollen and buttressed. Fruit of the Spruce are oblong cones 1.5-3.5 inches long with thin, woody, spirally arranged scales that have thin, notched edges and are tan when mature.
