Corylus avellana (Hazel) is a familiar sight throughout Scotland with its mid green leaves and long yellow catkins in early spring.  Corylus avellana, more commonly known as Hazel, is native to the whole of Britain and Europe.  It is often used for coppicing and is one of the first trees to leaf in the spring.  Hazelnuts can be used for exceptionally fine oil and used in sweets, etc.  Hazel trees can be a small shrub or a small tree no more than about 6m tall when mature.  In the winter, its yellow catkins appear, and fresh green leaves emerge in the spring through summer, turning a striking yellow in the autumn with nuts. 

Hazel is great for hedging or inclusion in hedgerow schemes.  It is very tough and resistant to frost.  It grows well in damp, fertile soils, as well as those drier, rocky areas.  One great thing about using Corylus avellana as hedging plants is that you can cut part way into the stem, lay it at an angle which then forms a strong stock proof barrier/ boundary hedge - sort of like 'pleaching'.
