Hornbeam 40/60cm Bare Root (Carpinus betulus)
PRODUCT CODE: CB-BR-40/60
Carpinus Betulus - Hornbeam
Hornbeam is great as a hedging plant as it can be planted in full sun or partial shade and is fast growing. It can tolerate damp or wet soils and even a certain amount of waterlogging, but only if it drains away. It also makes a great alternative to beech hedges as it stands up to hard pruning, has a denser foliage and in some situations is more suitable than Beech.
Carpinus Betulus is another native plant for the whole of the UK. Its leaves are similar in size to Beech, but more pronounced veins and not as smooth to the touch. Hornbeam like Beech retains its leaves in the winter which is great for screening, windbreak, boundary or barrier uses. It can also be used for coppicing, firewood, pleaching and in the garden as specimen tree.
