Characteristics

Pyracantha Orange Glow is a thorny evergreen shrub known as firethorn usually due to the berry fruit colour.  They are native to an area from Southwest Europe east to Northern Iran and are related to Cotoneaster.

Pyracantha bear white flowers about June / July and beautiful orange berry fruit for the autumn that will provide food for wildlife during the hard winter months.  They can grow up to 6m if left unpruned and the large spines are a natural impenetrable security barrier for gardens. They are valuable ornamental plants due to their decorative flowers and coloured fruit.  Heights and spreads are similar - 1.5-3m x 1.5x3m.

Where to Plant

Plant in full sun to partial shade, well-draining, moist soil.  They can be drought tolerant when mature.  Prune regularly to maintain shape.  Pyracantha can grow up to 6m if left unpruned.  Make sure you wear good gloves, as the thorns are large and sharp!.  Plant 2 per metre, single row for hedge
